The Three Little Pigs is a classic tale that has been told and retold since the late 1700s. It has been a regular feature in pre-school storytelling sessions, bedtime stories, and just like any other fairy tale, has been picked up by Disney and made into an animated film. Through this story, we've been introduced to the big bad wolf and we learned the lesson that bricks are the safest material for building a house. Avoid straws and sticks at all costs unless you want to be somebody else's dinner.
In the original plot, the first and second little pigs that constructed less sturdy houses ended up being swallowed by the big bad wolf. The huffing, puffing creature in turn falls into a boiling pot of water as he tries to get inside the third little pig's house through the chimney.
Over time, watered down versions of the Three Little Pigs were told to children as grownups realized that being eaten by a wolf and getting scalded were too gruesome.
The Three Little Pigs also had bouts with political correctness. Some schools changed it into Three Little Puppies so as not to offend Muslims. Another version of the story, The Three Little Cowboy Builders, was rejected by an awards panel because the story could be offensive to cowboys and builders. It's quite a surprise though that nobody seems to think it could be offensive as well to pigs and wolves.
